Outstanding Student Award Previous Winners

The Outstanding Student in Psychology Award is given annually by the faculty in the department to the student best displaying the following characteristics: academic performance, community service, Christian leadership, research achievement, clinical contributions, motivation and attitude, and potential for future contributions to the field of psychology.

Outstanding Student Award-2013Patrick Malaret is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2013 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award!
Outstanding Student Award-2012Ashley Armendariz is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2012 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award! Ashley has been a psychology major since she entered Vanguard as a freshman and has loved the field and excelled in classes ever since. She has been a member of Psi Chi, The International Honor Society in Psychology and was awarded the “Psychology Savant” award by scoring in the top quartile on a comprehensive Psychology Major Field Test. Ashley has also been recently inducted into Delta Kappa, Vanguard’s Honor Society, due to her academic achievements and service to Vanguard University. This service included involvement with Frontline for 3 years, working in the Undergraduate Admissions office for 2 ½ years and being a Resident Assistant for the summer of 2011. Ashley has also served as a Teaching Assistant for General Psychology as well as the Theories and Principles of Learning Rat Lab. Upon graduation, she hopes to obtain a Master’s degree and go into the field of behavioral psychology to provide early intervention for children with disabilities. Ashley would like to thank the professors and staff at Vanguard University that have both challenged and cared for her while encouraging her growth spiritually, intellectually, and personally.

Outstanding Student Award-2010Kaitlin McGhee is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2010 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award!
Outstanding Student Award-2009Heather Beylik is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2009 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award!
Outstanding Student Award-2008Joel Johnson is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2008 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award! Beyond being the vice president for Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, for 2007, Joel is one of this year’s “psychology savants.” He has received the Academic Presidential Scholarship, and has been on the Academic Honors list since 2004, and will be graduating summa cum laude. Joel has been a teaching assistant for multiple classes. During his senior year he presented a yearlong research project at the University of California, San Marcos. Joel has occasionally volunteered at non-profit organizations as well as been heavily involved in mission trips to Mexico since 2004, leading teams, translating, and teaching culturally appropriate behavior to his teams. Upon graduation Joel and his wife, Lori, both plan on attending graduate school where Joel hopes to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology.
Outstanding Student Award-2007Valerie Elwell is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2007 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award! Valerie has worked as direct care staff at a group home for the last year, working with at risk adolescents. Valerie was Treasurer of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology. She has been a member of Psi Chi since 2005. In 2006, she received the Provost’s Award for the highest GPA in the junior class. During the summer of 2006, she served with a missions team to Mozambique working with orphans and the surrounding community of Machava. She has served as a TA and a research assistant in her junior and senior years at VU. Upon graduation she plans to work with at risk adolescents and then go on to graduate school to pursue her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology.
Outstanding Student Award-2006Ciprian Boitor is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2006 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award! Ciprian has worked as direct care staff at a group home for the last two years, working with at risk adolescents. He has also gained work experience with autistic children. Ciprian was a “psychology savant” as well as a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society. Ciprian has been on the forensic team from 2004-2006 as well as being a viola player in the school orchestra from 2004-2006 and serving as an officer in 2006. He has served on summer missions trips each summer for the last four years. For the last two summers he led an orphanage camp for 50 adolescents in the Republic of Moldova. Upon graduation he plans to continue working with autistic children and then go on to graduate school.
osa2005Cheri Reynolds is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2005 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award! Among Cheri’s many accomplishments are the following: 4.0 cumulative G.P.A., elected to Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, recipient of the President’s Honor Award and the Social Science Division Outstanding Achievement Award for 2005, and is one of this year’s “Psychology Savants.” Cheri has served as a teaching assistant for Statistics on two separate occasions and has worked with both Free Arts for Abused Children and Human Options, a shelter for battered women and their children.
osa2004Dr. K.J. Hummel presents the Department of Psychology’s 2004 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award to Joel Forbes! Joel is graduating magna cum laude and has been active in many diverse activities. Joel was a member of the forensics team (2002-2003 debater of the year), served as a research assistant for Dr. Degelman, and served as the psychology student representative to the Faculty Search Committee. Joel has also served as an assistant scout master for a local Boy Scout troop and is currently helping to start Above and Beyond, a non-profit organization aimed at helping inner-city youth involved in gang activity and drugs.
Outstanding Student 2003, Jennaya HicksJennaya Hicks is the recipient of the Department of Psychology’s 2003 “Outstanding Student in Psychology” award! Among Jennaya’s many accomplishments are the following: 4.0 cumulative G.P.A., elected to Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, President of the Vanguard University Concert Choir, recipient of the Presidential Academic Scholarship, and recipient of the Social Science Division Outstanding Achievement Award. Jennaya has served as a Teaching Assistant for both Behavior Modification and Introduction to Statistical Methods, and Jennaya has served as an intern at Children’s Bureau of Southern California, educating teen moms on infant care and parenting techniques and making a presentation to social workers on the impact of divorce on children.
